Apprenticeships boost for Bradford

A new apprenticeships scheme is being launched to provide local bricklaying and joinery jobs for local people in Bradford.  Jack Lunn (Construction) Ltd will join a number of construction companies in the biggest ever Programme Led Apprenticeship (PLA) scheme organised by three key partners – Bradford Council’s Links 2 team, Accent Community Partnerships and Construction Skills.

The aim of the scheme is to kick start the Bradford economy by qualifying ten applications to NVQ Level 2 in construction apprenticeships.

Council Adrian Naylor, Executive Member for Regeneration at Bradford Council, said: “The idea is to provide local jobs for local people using forward thinking contractors who want to hit the ground running when the recession comes to an end.

“They want to be able to use a locally trained and skilled workforce to deliver construction projects in Bradford once they get off the ground.”

These vacancies are aimed at people already possessing a current Intermediate Construction Award (ICA).

The positions will be paid apprenticeships for six months and will enable beneficiaries to achieve work based evidence in order to complete their NVQ Level 2.

Nicky McAlpine, Project Manager of the Links 2 team, said: “This is an exciting opportunity to train local people previously unable to gather evidence in order to achieve an NVQ Level 2.  The Council has been able to part fund these positions to provide recipients with a wage throughout their training.”

Andrew Lunn, Contracts Director of Jack Lunn (Construction) Ltd, commented:  “We recruit several new apprentices in brickwork and joinery through local colleges every year and we are always seeking new ways to support the local community.  This is a fantastic initiative to be involved with as we place a major emphasis on training and development within our business.  In fact the first bricklaying apprentice recruited through the PLA scheme is already enjoying his training on one of our social and affordable housing scheme in Bradford".
