Rainbow House is a facility designed specifically to provide short break care for children and young people with learning difficulties or mental health needs to enable them to gain confidence away from their parents, with the aim of preparing them for greater independence in adult life.
As the design and build contractor appointed to deliver the Independent Living Project, Jack Lunn Construction designed and built the high-specification short break unit featuring 12 individual bedrooms, each with en-suite facilities. Rainbow House is fully accessible for wheelchair users and includes a sensory room, ball pool and playground. Three bedrooms are in a specially designed self-help unit for young people over 14, to help develop their independent living skills.
The project is a prime example of collaborative working between all stakeholders. From the initial planning stages through to the design, layout and choice of facilities, all stakeholders including parents, children and care experts, have worked together to deliver accommodation tailored to the specialised needs of the residents.
The overall Independent Living Project forms a major part of a modernisation programme which aims to significantly improve accommodation, housing-related support and care services for adults and children with learning difficulties or mental health needs. In addition to the children’s unit, Jack Lunn Construction will deliver a range of flats, houses and bungalows in 75 buildings constructed on 41 sites around the Leeds area over a three year period. The new properties with residential management and care provision make a tremendous difference to the lives of service users by allowing them to live closer to their own communities in smaller, less institutional and more independent settings.
